I wrangled with the question of whether D was too young for this shizzle, but after hearing him plead with his big bro many a time if he could play ‘Crossy Road’ or make Cupcakes, I knew his time had come. Whenever we went on holiday, I would load up my ipad with great movies for him to watch on the plane and he loved it.
Luckily Father Christmas was savvy enough to get a friend to load up said ipad with loads of new movies and educational fun-friendly apps so Dominic was good to go from the off on Christmas Day. Needn’t have bothered really cos that wee guy has homed in on exactly what he wants to watch, courtesy of his fave channel, You Tube, with NO help from anyone, whatsoever! Between getting down to Justin Beiber and Bruno Mars, D likes to flick his favourite ‘shows’ and his tastes are varied!
Weird stuff that I’ve discovered 3 year olds LOVE LOVE LOVE are:
1. Watching other children play with character figures & Sidewalk Cops
Yep, my boy gets himself comfy and sits back to view other families playing with toys HE likes and using THEIR imaginations! Um…something wrong with this picture! My gorgeous son is super active on a daily basis so I don’t mind when he chills for a bit, BUT talk about switching off completely! Why have a dog and bark yourself? They will do role play with Paw Patrol figures, cars, Fireman Sam…hell you can find a video using whatever character you fancy on there. If left to his own devices (which he isn’t) he would spend the day living vicariously through his peers on the small screen.
Then you have the more grown up version when the barely school ages dudes jump in their ride-ons to create and solve crime in Sidewalk Cops.
This is one of his faves (and mine!)
2. Peppa Pig In German/Russian/Mexican/Any Other Language imaginable
Yup, apparently family fave Peppa sounds way better in multilingual bursts! I’ve come in from the kitchen to find Dominic enthralled by Grandpa Pig teaching the little piggies how to grow flowers in Dutch! We also like this one where George catches a cold while it rains in Spain!
3. Kids unboxing Kinder Eggs or any other gift
Just like I’d get all wobbly if I watched the unveiling of the latest Chanel Bag on You Tube, Dominic (and it would seem, 25 million of his worldwide peers) get a kick from viewing other children excitedly opening their latest Kinder surprise toy or Birthday surprises. One of these clearly was made up of every small figure the child already owned that his mum had cleverly encased in a shiny, colourful plastic tomb so they could make a whole 20 minute video out of it. ย I am worried D is gearing up for his birthday later this month and I have to admit I have googled ’empty plastic eggs’ yes I have…..
This is one of Dominic’s favourites (and longest – though I promise he hasn’t seen it all the way through!) with a staggering 35 MILLION views!!!!
And the Queen of unboxing seems to be Hailey, of Hailey’s Magical Playhouse!
4. ย Waterslides, the bigger and faster the better!
Thanks to a generation of go-pro families, you now do not need to go to the worlds waviest, scariest or longest waterslides yourself. Nope, my too-short in real life pre-schooler son can virtually slipslide down the torrents of the worlds trickiest tunnels! Over and over and over and over again……
5. Play Doh. Of any kind. for as long as possible….
Last time I looked, there were about 550,000 options for watching kids making/using play doh on YT! I like this one because if he’s watching it on there, my kitchen floor and the soles of all our shoes are safe! Ohhh yes! I am not that ‘let’s decimate the kitchen and have a play doh fun day mum’ so it suits me just fine that if he isn’t actually making it himself at pre-school or at the many groups and activities we do, then it can remain firmly in the mess-free domain of his Ipad!
Here is the one with the most hits from this house at the mo!
What things does your little one like to watch? I’m sure Dominic would welcome suggestions!

haha this is a great post! my 4 year old son watches all those things.
The weirdest ones I’ve seen him watch are ADULTS playing with figures. Like full on childs role play but an adults voice. Really strange!

Ginger Mum
Yes!!!!These are the weirdest but most popular of all!!!! Feels great I’m not in a lone bubble haha
Yvonne
I have never understood the obsession with watching people play with kinder eggs or playdoh, but my twin three-year-olds love this as well! x
Ginger Mum
Haha, I knew this wasn’t just us!I am baffled by it’s appeal!

I absolutely love this. My children amaze me with what they watch on You Tube. They would rather watch other children play with toys on a screen (toys they probably own) than play themselves!
On a side note, my iPad has been a godsend with the tiniest human. BBC iPlayer has given me a couple of 7 O’clock wake up calls, which is waaaaay better than the alternative. Should I admit to using my iPad as a babysitter….? #justanotherlinky

Ginger Mum
Yes, they much prefer to watch others! And no, don’t admit it, I won’t tell ๐

My 3 year old is obsessed with the play doh & kinder egg videos! She’s started coming out with things like “Hi guuuuuys” in an American accent. Ugh. And have you discovered the surprise egg app for your phone? It’s awesome, my girl will sit there for ages tapping the screen like a deranged woodpecker. I can highly recommend it!
Ginger Mum
Oh Lordy I’m downloading this app immediately!!!! Thanks for sharing!
Sam
Ha, the kinder eggs and play-doh ones are very familiar. The music from the play-doh one is ingrained on my soul.
Most mornings I get woken up by IT’S BABY BIGMOUTH, SURPRISE!! about 2 inches from my face.
Very strange.
Ginger Mum
Haha surreal isn’t it? Gotta love Baby Big Mouth!
Becster
My toddler LOVES the iPad and yup Peppa Pig is a firm favourite. And Thomas The Tank is another x
Ginger Mum
Wait til you get to unboxing Thomas eggs whilst watching Peppa in Norwegian lol
kim neville
My son loves watching all these types of videos and also rollercoasters ever since going to Disneyland Paris
Ginger Mum
I will add rollercoasters to his favourites! Will make me sick though ๐
Emma
Great post, we don’t use the iPad much, but you have made me wonder if we should.
Ginger Mum
Erk, it’s a slippery slope! Especially when they come in at 5am shouting, MORNING!!! Can I have my IPAD???? Er, NO!!
Honest Mum
Brilliant, my kids love YouTube too-have you seen the Bear Yo Yo videos, Oliver adores them. I’ve started collecting the cards with him, just need to encourage him to make his own videos! x
Ginger Mum
No! I will get him on to bear yoyo. That’s so funny, Harry suggested Dominic start doing his own videos too. Maybe they can collab ๐ ๐
Something Crunchy Mummy
Haha my boys watch all these types on YouTube! Thanks for linking up to #justanotherlinky xx

New Mummy Blog
Oh wow, that’s incredible! Though, I kind of get why he likes watching other kids play, it’s a bit like watching them in real life and learning for them. I can’t believe how many view some of them have, that’s amazing! He might turn round speaking Spanish one day… you might have to be prepared ๐
Thanks for linking up again and hope you can next week #TheBabyFormula
Ginger Mum
Well, what a bonus that would be lol
Rebecca Smith
Yep, you have described Jack to a tee!

Love this! I’m glad my 3 year old isn’t the only one to watch play doh and kinder eggs. I did find her watching a weird one the other day with a man dressed as spiderman opening toys and eggs! She has also started to say ‘Candies’ instead of ‘sweets’ – too much ipad?!?
Ginger Mum
Oh Gosh yes too much haha. They will all be so Americanised soon! We’ve watched that Spiderman too!!!
Becky (And Then There Were Two)
YouTube is a crazy creature isn’t it?! My eldest is now into watching similar stuff – another favourite of his is watching the screen play games he has on the iPad?! Instead of actually playing them himself! He has recently discovered the American version of Thomas and Friends which is mildly (very) irritating! Thanks for sharing on #chucklemums
Ginger Mum
Yeah, weirdly they all love watching others play, I just don’t get it!!!!
Emma
I have heard about the kinder eggs one which I am very confused about! Luckily my two are just into paws patrol for now……#chucklemums
Ginger Mum
Oh that rules our house too! There’s a blog post on that too, trust me ๐
Fran @ Whinge Whinge Wine
Oh goodness, my daughter is only two and for some unfathomable reason has access to her own ipad (apparently husband needed the upgrade) and if she is in a particularly foul mood she loves a bit of youtube. Her favourites are grown women dressed as Disney princesses and Peppa in German. Who the hell knows!
#chucklemums
Ginger Mum
That too, yup! And grown men dressed as superheroes making ‘gross pizza’……!!!!
Baby Anon
Ha ha, great list. Love the comparison of opening a gift to the unveiling of a new Chanel bag #chucklemums
Ginger Mum
Diff’rnt strokes hey? ๐
Sarah
What is with the unboxing?! Did you know there are unboxing videos for toy trains? How do I know this?! Oh yes, I’ve had to watch the sodding things!!! #chucklemums
Ginger Mum
It’s the thrill of the unknown hahaha….
Bad Dadu
I also have a child that if allowed would probably soend all day watching other people opening surprise eggs or playing with Play-doh or best of all people playing with surprise eggs made out of Play-doh.

Needless to say YouTube access is limited.
